The short answer (updated October 2026):
- A YouTube Short can be up to 3 minutes (180 seconds) long, if the video is square or vertical. Longer or wider, and it posts as a regular video.
- YouTube publishes no minimum length.
- Past 1 minute, music gets tighter: most Shorts Audio Library songs cover up to 90 seconds.
- From September 24, 2026, YouTube says a Content ID claim no longer blocks a new 1-to-3-minute Short automatically. Its US English help page still says it does.
- Our call for coaches: 30 to 60 seconds for reach, 1 to 3 minutes to teach a method. At an average speaking pace, 60 seconds is about 150 words.
You have a two-minute answer to a question clients ask every week. Will YouTube count it as a Short? Will anyone stay to the end?
YouTube will count it. A Short can run 3 minutes, as long as it's square or vertical. Whether two minutes is the right length depends on the Short's job. The spec table below has a source on every row, and the 60-second script further down is ready to copy.
YouTube Shorts can be up to 3 minutes long
The limit is 3 minutes. YouTube's Help Center says any video uploaded on or after October 15, 2024 "with a square or vertical aspect ratio up to three minutes in length will be categorized as Shorts." You can upload one from the YouTube app or from YouTube Studio. In the app's Shorts camera, your clips can add up to three minutes.
Shorts used to stop at 60 seconds. YouTube announced the longer limit on its Official Blog on October 3, 2024, calling it "a top requested feature by creators." A guide that still gives 60 seconds as the limit is out of date.
Two things keep a video from counting as a Short. Run past 3:00, or use a frame wider than square, such as 4:3 or 16:9, and it posts as a regular video. The Help Center is plain about the second one: to keep a video out of Shorts, "use a wider aspect ratio such as 16:9." Old uploads stay as they were, too. A vertical two-minute video posted before October 15, 2024 is still a long-form video.
You never tag anything as a Short. YouTube sorts each upload by its shape and length. When you schedule a vertical video of 3 minutes or less to YouTube from CreateSocial, the caption is written for a Short as well: a short title and a one- or two-sentence description. For the making itself, from idea to upload, see how to make YouTube Shorts.
YouTube Shorts specs, with a source for every row
"None published" means we looked and YouTube gives no number.
| Spec | Rule | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Maximum length | 3 minutes (180 seconds) | Help Center: three-minute Shorts |
| Minimum length | None published for a Short. Only the app's Edit with AI tool asks for at least 5 seconds of footage. | Help Center: Create Shorts |
| Aspect ratio | Square or vertical (1:1 or taller, such as 9:16). A 4:3 or 16:9 video posts as a regular video. | Help Center: three-minute Shorts |
| Resolution | Up to 1080p | Help Center: Create Shorts |
| Title | Up to 100 characters | Help Center: Create Shorts |
| Uploads from a computer | Up to 15 Shorts at a time, from YouTube Studio | Help Center: Upload Shorts |
| Videos uploaded before October 15, 2024 | Stay long-form, even if vertical and under 3 minutes | Help Center: three-minute Shorts |
| Shorts Audio Library songs | Most can cover up to 90 seconds of a 3-minute Short. Some stop at 60 or 30. | Help Center: three-minute Shorts |
| Royalty-free YouTube Audio Library | Free to use, and gets no Content ID claim | Help Center: three-minute Shorts |
| New Short over 1 minute with a Content ID claim | From September 24, 2026, no longer blocked automatically, and may stay playable. The US English page still says blocked. | Help Center: three-minute Shorts (UK English) |
| Edit into a Short (from your own long video) | Up to 60 seconds of a public video you uploaded, with no Audio Library music | Help Center: Shorts from your videos |
| Thumbnail | A custom 2160 x 3840 (9:16) image, uploaded in YouTube Studio on a computer, if your channel is verified. Partner Program creators got it first, in July 2026, and YouTube hasn't said when every channel gets it. Otherwise you pick a frame: one of three that Studio suggests on a computer, or any frame in the YouTube app. More in our Shorts thumbnail size and rules. | Help Center: Add custom thumbnails and Official Blog, July 24, 2026 |
| Link to a longer video | One related video, shown under your channel handle. Needs advanced feature access. | Help Center: Related video |
Checked against YouTube's Help Center on October 21, 2026, and the thumbnail row on October 26.
For a talking-head Short, export 9:16 at 1080 x 1920. That is the 1080p ceiling in the shape of a phone screen. Square counts as a Short too, but it leaves part of the screen empty. If it also goes to Instagram, the profile grid crops that frame. Check how Instagram crops a 9:16 Reel before you put words near the top or bottom.
Want the same take as a regular YouTube video? CreateSocial's Dual mode frames 16:9 and 9:16 at once, so one recording gives you the wide video and the Short. Posting it as a Reel as well? Instagram has its own limits, covered in how long Instagram Reels can be. For TikTok, see how long a TikTok can be.
Past 1 minute, the music and claim rules change
The 1-minute mark still matters, even though Shorts now run to 3. Music and copyright claims follow different rules past it, and one of those rules changed on September 24, 2026.
Start with music. Most songs in the Shorts Audio Library can play for up to 90 seconds of a 3-minute Short, and some are limited to 60 or 30 seconds. Picking a song shows how many seconds it will cover. Tracks from the royalty-free YouTube Audio Library get no Content ID claim at all.
Now claims. Until recently, a Short over 1 minute with any active copyright claim was blocked worldwide. It couldn't play, get recommended or earn. The Help Center now says that from September 24, 2026, "new Shorts longer than one minute (but under three minutes) with an active Content ID claim will no longer be automatically blocked and may remain playable." Shorts under a minute see no change.
Not every YouTube page has caught up. The US English version of that article, linked above, still says such Shorts "will be blocked globally." The UK, Indian and Australian English versions carry the September change, and so does the US Create YouTube Shorts article. Google's AI Overview for "youtube shorts length" was further behind on October 21, still capping commercial music at 60 seconds.
Our read: treat a claim past 1:00 as a risk anyway. "May remain playable" is not a promise. A talking-head Short in your own words rarely needs a song. If you want music under a Short longer than a minute, take a royalty-free track from the YouTube Audio Library and the question goes away.
How long should a YouTube Short be? Set it by the job
Set the length by what the Short has to do. YouTube names no ideal length, so the middle column is our call. The evidence beside it is the best we found.
| The Short's job | Length (our call) | What the evidence says | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Reach people who don't know you | 30 to 60 seconds | 53% of 507 creators named under 30 seconds their best length for views. The average Short is watched for about 16 seconds. | Adobe Express survey (linked below), Metricool |
| Win subscribers | 30 to 60 seconds | Creators split evenly: 34% named under 30 seconds and 34% named 30 to 60. | Adobe Express survey (linked below) |
| Send viewers to a long video | Under 60 seconds, with the ask in the last 5 | YouTube says to build the call to action into the final 5 seconds. 49% of creators say Shorts under 30 seconds drive more click-throughs, against 36% for longer ones. | YouTube Official Blog, Adobe Express (linked below) |
| Teach a method to people who follow you | 1 to 3 minutes | YouTube raised the limit to give creators "more flexibility to tell your story." Keep any music royalty-free past 1:00. | YouTube Official Blog |
| Anything that needs more than 3:00 | Post it as a regular video | Past 3 minutes, it isn't a Short. | Help Center |
Read the two sources for what they are. The Adobe Express survey asked 507 YouTube creators with at least 1,000 subscribers in March 2026, so it measures what creators believe. Metricool's 2026 study measures what viewers did: across 799,718 videos from 71,177 accounts, average view duration fell to "roughly 16 seconds per Short."
Our call: start a coaching Short at 30 to 60 seconds, even though most surveyed creators say under 30 wins for views. The survey covers every kind of channel, and a joke lands in 15 seconds. A coaching point needs the claim and the example that proves it. At an average pace, 30 seconds is about 75 words. That fits a hook and a claim, rarely the example.
Treat the 16 seconds as a warning, not a target. Plenty of viewers swipe away before then, however long the Short runs, so your point has to land in the first 15 seconds. The rest of the Short is for the people who stay. Those are the ones who might book a call, which is why the right viewers beat more viewers.
How many words fit in a YouTube Short
About 150 words fit in a 60-second Short, and about 450 fill the full 3 minutes. The National Center for Voice and Speech puts the average US speaking rate at about 150 words a minute. If you pause a lot, plan on 120, the slow mark from our guide to how many words fit in a 2-minute speech.
| Short length | Words at 150 a minute | Words at 120 a minute | What fits |
|---|---|---|---|
| 15 seconds | About 38 | 30 | One line and its payoff |
| 30 seconds | About 75 | 60 | A hook, a claim and one reason |
| 45 seconds | About 110 | 90 | A claim and a short example |
| 60 seconds | 150 | 120 | A hook, one point, one example and an ask |
| 90 seconds | 225 | 180 | Two or three steps of a method |
| 2 minutes | 300 | 240 | A client story and its lesson, details changed |
| 3 minutes | 450 | 360 | A full method, or a story with a setup, a turn and a lesson |
Write to the number, then time it out loud. In CreateSocial, pick 30-60s as the idea's length and the script is written for it. The teleprompter then scrolls at a set pace, from 80 to 260 words a minute, so a 150-word script at 150 takes a minute.
Here is a 60-second Short at that length, for a hypothetical leadership coach whose clients manage first-time managers. It runs 149 words.
HOOK (0:00 to 0:04, 11 words) If your new manager says "all good" every week, something's wrong. POINT (0:04 to 0:18, 34 words) They're rarely hiding anything. New managers often don't know what's worth raising yet, so they give you the safe answer. And "How's it going?" makes the safe answer easy. The problem is the question. EXAMPLE (0:18 to 0:49, 76 words) So change it. Ask, "What took longer than it should have this week?" It's about the work, so it's safe to answer honestly. Listen for answers like waiting on approvals, or one person stuck doing everyone else's reviews. Each one is a problem nobody has said out loud yet. Don't fix it on the spot. Ask what they would change, and let them answer first. That's how a new manager learns to bring you problems early. ASK (0:49 to 1:00, 28 words) Try it in your next one-on-one, then tell me what you heard in the comments. The full video has four more questions, and it's linked under my handle.
The hook and the point are done by 0:18, close to that 16-second average, so even a viewer who leaves early gets the idea. The ask points to the full video, which you'd add as the Short's related video. For more openers built the same way, see these video hook examples for coaches.
How to turn a long video into YouTube Shorts
Cut one standalone point per Short, 15 to 90 seconds long, frame it 9:16 and link it back to the full video.
- Find moments that stand alone. The YouTube Official Blog says a clipped Short should be "a standalone piece of value that makes sense without outside context." Test it: would a stranger get the point with no setup?
- Keep one point per Short. If the question comes minutes before the answer, join the two and drop everything in between.
- Reframe to 9:16 and keep words clear of the buttons. Subtitles that sit under the like button are subtitles nobody reads.
- Link the full video. In YouTube Studio, add it as the Short's related video. Then say so in the last 5 seconds, and point down at the link.
YouTube has two tools for this, and both start from a video already on your channel. In the app, Edit into a Short takes up to 60 seconds of a public video you uploaded, with no Audio Library music. In Studio, the Clips and Shorts tool lets you select the words you want from the transcript and adds the source as the related video for you.
Many of your best long videos never went up on YouTube: the client webinar, the conference talk, the workshop recording. Upload one to CreateSocial, and on any video of 8 minutes or more Find Clips suggests up to five standalone clips of about 15 to 90 seconds, each with a strength score. A clip can stitch two or three moments from different parts of the video, so a question from minute 4 can meet its answer from minute 19. Each one becomes its own vertical video with subtitles, and your edits carry over, so removed silences and deleted words stay out.
Recording the long video yourself? Dual mode shows the 9:16 frame while you record, so you can see how each vertical clip will look.
Judge a Short's length by who stayed to watch
Judge length with two numbers in YouTube Studio: Stayed to watch and Average percentage viewed. Raw views won't help. YouTube counts a Short's view every time it starts or replays, with no minimum watch time, so a fast swipe counts.
YouTube's Analytics help defines the two that do help. Stayed to watch is "the percentage of times viewers stayed to watch past the initial seconds of a Short." Average percentage viewed is worked out only from the viewers who stayed. Together they tell you whether the hook held and whether the length did.
Open your last five Shorts and write down three numbers for each: length, stayed to watch and average percentage viewed. A weak stayed-to-watch figure means the hook lost people. Fix that before you touch the length. If your 90-second Shorts keep a lower share of their viewers than your 40-second ones, cut the longer ones harder. If they hold up, make more of them.
How CreateSocial turns what you know into Shorts that bring in clients
CreateSocial helps coaches and consultants build a personal brand that brings in clients, speaking gigs and customers, without content taking over the week. It learns what you know and runs the whole content week, video and written: ideas, scripts, posts, recording, editing, thumbnails and scheduling. Here is a week of Shorts inside it.
- Scripts sized to the Short. Add your website, past videos and posts, and client stories to your knowledge base. CreateSocial turns them into 80 personalized ideas a month, each with a hook and talking points or a full script, written to the length you pick. Trending Now adds what your niche is talking about every Monday, and "Ask me first" asks you a few questions so the Short tells your real story.
- One take, both shapes. Read off the teleprompter near your camera, at your desk or on the iPhone app. Each point is its own section, so a stumble costs one retake. Dual mode frames the Short and the wide YouTube version at once.
- Trim it to the second. Delete a sentence from the transcript and it leaves the video. Remove Silences takes out the pauses in one click, and eye contact correction fixes the glances at your script. Subtitles go on in 11 styles, with safe-zone guides that show where the Shorts buttons sit.
- Your long videos become Shorts. Find Clips pulls standalone clips of about 15 to 90 seconds from any webinar or talk of 8 minutes or more, and joins a setup to its payoff when they sit far apart.
- Posted for you, at your time. Schedule to YouTube, TikTok, Instagram, LinkedIn, Facebook and X, each with a caption written for that platform. Once your accounts are connected, we post it for you, and you get an email when it's live. On YouTube, the Short uploads early as a private video and goes public at your time. Batch a month in one sitting if that suits you.
- See what each one did. The Analytics page gathers views, likes, comments and shares from your connected YouTube, TikTok, Instagram, LinkedIn and Facebook accounts in one place.
Also in the one plan: competitor tracking, written posts with no video (LinkedIn posts, X threads, blog posts and emails to your list), LinkedIn carousels with PDF and PNG export, screen recording with your camera as a bubble, reaction videos in Layout or Stitch mode, virtual backgrounds with or without a real green screen, B-roll from free stock video, and YouTube thumbnails and vertical covers made from your video and photos of you.
Behind all of it is one person. I'm Ben Moore, and I built CreateSocial on my own, bootstrapped, here in Cincinnati, Ohio, so you talk to me directly. Feature requests come to me, and a lot of what customers ask for gets built. Before CreateSocial, my agency generated millions of followers and millions of dollars in revenue for its clients, and I've generated hundreds of millions of views.
It costs $129 a month, or $99 a month billed annually, with no add-ons and no per-feature charges. Start your free trial and cut your first Shorts from a video you already have. Want a month of Shorts mapped to your offer first? Book a free strategy call with me.
Make your next Short one point long
Pick one question a client asked you this month. Then:
- Give the Short one job: reach, subscribers or a link to a long video.
- Set its length from the job table, 30 to 60 seconds if you're unsure.
- Write to the word count. For 60 seconds, that's about 150 words.
- Record it, cut the pauses and check the clock. At 3:01, it's no longer a Short.
- A week later, check stayed to watch against your last five.
A free CreateSocial trial gets that Short scripted, recorded, subtitled and posted this week.
Questions people ask
Are YouTube Shorts 3 minutes now?
Yes. Since October 15, 2024, a square or vertical video of up to 3 minutes uploads as a Short. Before that, Shorts stopped at 60 seconds.
Can YouTube Shorts be 2 minutes long?
Yes. 90 seconds or 2 minutes is well inside the 3-minute limit, as long as the video is square or vertical. Past the 1-minute mark, check your music, because most Shorts Audio Library songs cover 90 seconds at most.
Is there a minimum length for YouTube Shorts?
YouTube publishes no minimum for a Short. The only floor we found is 5 seconds of footage for the app's Edit with AI tool. For a coach, under 30 seconds rarely fits a point and the example that proves it, so start at 30 to 60 seconds.
Can a YouTube Short be 4:3?
No. A 4:3 video is wider than square, so YouTube posts it as a regular video. A Short has to be square or taller, such as 9:16.
Why is my vertical video not showing as a Short?
It is probably over 3 minutes, wider than square, or uploaded before October 15, 2024. Videos posted before that date stay long-form, even when they are vertical and under 3 minutes.
Are Shorts over 1 minute with copyrighted music blocked?
Not automatically, for new Shorts from September 24, 2026. YouTube's Help Center now says Shorts of 1 to 3 minutes with an active Content ID claim may remain playable, though its US English page still says they are blocked. Royalty-free music from the YouTube Audio Library avoids the claim.
What is the best length for a YouTube Short?
YouTube names no ideal length. For coaches, 30 to 60 seconds suits reach and subscribers, and 1 to 3 minutes suits teaching a method to people who already follow you.
