How long can Instagram Reels be? 20 minutes (3 for reach)

Instagram Reels can run up to 20 minutes, recorded or uploaded. Past 3 minutes, Instagram stops recommending them to people who don't follow you.

Ben Moore

The short answer (updated October 2026):

  • An Instagram Reel can be up to 20 minutes long, recorded in the Reels camera or uploaded from a computer.
  • Reels over 3 minutes are not recommended to people who don't follow you, so 3 minutes is the real ceiling if you want reach.
  • Reels ads can run up to 15 minutes. Trial reels have no limit of their own, but they go to non-followers, so keep them to 3 minutes or less.
  • For coaches: 45 to 90 seconds for reach, 90 seconds to 3 minutes for trust, and longer only for a booking Reel aimed at your followers.

Checked against Instagram's Help Center and Meta's Ads Guide on October 11, 2026.

You have a four-minute video answering a question clients ask every week. Will Instagram take it as a Reel? Will anyone outside your followers see it?

Instagram will take it. Reels can run up to 20 minutes. Strangers are another story, because reach runs on a much shorter clock. So decide the Reel's job first, and let the job set the length.

Instagram Reels can be up to 20 minutes, recorded or uploaded

The limit is 20 minutes, whether you record in the Reels camera or upload a file from your computer. Instagram's Help Center puts it in one line: "You can record one or multiple clips that add up to 20 minutes."

If a guide or your app says less, check its date. Reels were capped at 90 seconds until January 2025, when Instagram head Adam Mosseri raised the limit to 3 minutes. In November 2025, Instagram added 20-minute recording to the Reels camera.

Instagram's own pages haven't all caught up. The Reels feature page still says 3 minutes. So does the Help Center article's own summary in search. Meta's Ads Guide says Reels ads can run 15 minutes, "similar to organic Reels". Trust the article body. It's the most specific, and it matches the November 2025 change.

The 3-minute line decides who sees your Reel

A Reel over 3 minutes still posts. It just stops traveling. The Help Center is plain about it: "Reels over 3 minutes won't be recommended to new audiences."

Socialinsider's Reels length study shows what that looks like. It covers 6 million Reels from brands active between January and June 2026. Reels over 3 minutes had a median of 4,428 views. Reels of 2 to 3 minutes had 9,000. Engagement fell from 0.33% to 0.15%. It's brand data, not coaching data, but Socialinsider blames the same 3-minute rule.

Over 20 minutes? Trim it in the reel editor. If every minute counts, post a 3-minute cut as the Reel and the full video on YouTube, linked from your bio.

Reels ads run to 15 minutes, and trial reels should stay under 3

If you plan to boost a coaching Reel, Meta's Ads Guide for Instagram Reels allows 0 seconds to 15 minutes. The guide also says ads should not contain licensed music, so record with original audio. Keep subtitles inside the safe zone from the table, clear of the profile icon and call-to-action button.

Trial reels have no length limit of their own. The difference is the audience: a trial goes to non-followers first. To use one, you need a public account with at least 200 followers (professional) or 1,000 (personal).

Our call: keep trials to 3 minutes or less. A trial is a test on strangers. A long one hits the 3-minute line and tests almost nothing.

For coaches, start at 45 to 90 seconds, not 7 to 15

Start a coaching Reel at 45 to 90 seconds. CreatorsJet's guide to Reel length goes much shorter, calling 7 to 15 seconds "the safest starting range". That suits a joke or a transition. A coaching idea has to make a point and then show it working. Fifteen seconds rarely holds both.

Socialinsider's data backs the longer start:

Reel length Median views Engagement rate
Under 30 seconds4,7000.28%
30 to 45 seconds8,5640.30%
45 to 60 seconds10,3740.35%
60 to 90 seconds9,7900.30%
90 to 120 seconds8,0000.30%
2 to 3 minutes9,0000.33%
Over 3 minutes4,4280.15%

Source: Socialinsider, July 14, 2026.

Reels under 30 seconds got less than half the median views of Reels at 45 to 60 seconds. From 30 seconds to 3 minutes, the numbers barely move. That fits what Mosseri said in February 2025: Instagram counts seconds watched, not only the percentage. Ten seconds of a one-minute video is as many seconds as all of a 10-second one, so "you won't be penalized."

One coaching idea cut three ways: reach, trust and a booking

Here is one idea cut three ways, for a hypothetical leadership coach whose clients are new managers. The idea: a new manager who says "all good" in every one-on-one is avoiding a hard conversation.

Goal Length and audience How the time is spent Ends with
Reach 45 to 75 seconds. Can reach non-followers. 0:00 to 0:03, the hook: "If your new manager says 'all good' in every one-on-one, something is wrong." Then what it costs the team, then one question to ask instead. "Send this to a manager who needs it."
Trust 90 seconds to 3 minutes. Still reaches non-followers, but written for people who know you. The same hook. Then why new managers dodge feedback, three questions in order, and how an honest answer and an evasive one sound. "Save this for your next one-on-one."
Booking 2 to 5 minutes. Mostly reaches followers, which is fine here. Who the program is and isn't for, what the first session covers, what the coach expects of clients, and how to get the price. "DM me MANAGER and I'll send the details."

The reach cut ends on a send because Mosseri said in January 2025 that "sends are slightly more important for unconnected content", meaning people who don't follow you.

The booking cut runs long because its viewers already know your name and want answers before a call. Its DM keyword starts the conversation where the call gets booked. Why the right viewers beat more viewers is in qualified attention. The Instagram strategy for coaches maps the path from Reel to call, and Instagram stories and DMs for coaches covers the DM step.

How to cut a script to the length you picked

Time the script out loud and cut setup first. In order:

  1. Write the one point as a single sentence. If it takes two, it's two Reels.
  2. Write the first 3 seconds last. Instagram's creator guidance says to "hook your audience within the first 3 seconds", so that line names the problem in the viewer's words.
  3. Read it aloud with a timer, at your on-camera pace. If it runs long, cut setup and keep the example. The example is what people stay for.
  4. Record, then cut the pauses and restarts. Dead air is the cheapest time to lose. Editing talking-head videos faster covers the order.
  5. Add captions. The same guidance says to "optimize for sound off".
  6. Check the final length. A Reel meant for strangers has to be 3:00 or under. At 3:04, it's over.

How CreateSocial helps you land a Reel on length

With CreateSocial you record a Reel in sections, so when one part runs long you redo only that part. In the reach cut above, the hook, the cost, the question and the send line each become a section. You read each one off a teleprompter near the camera. If the question runs 40 seconds and pushes the Reel past 75, you re-record the question. Steps 4 and 5 happen in the editor: silence removal cuts the pauses, and subtitles go on in one of 11 styles.

Android is the gap. The phone app is iPhone only for now, so on Android you'd record at a desk in Chrome or Edge. If that works for you, start a free trial and record your next Reel in sections.

Check your last five Reels before you trust any benchmark

Before you trust anyone's benchmark, ours included, check your own Reels. Mosseri said in January 2025 that the top three ranking signals are watch time, likes and sends.

So open your last five Reels and note three numbers for each: length, average watch time and sends per reach. A 90-second Reel with a 12-second average watch time probably lost most people early. Fix that hook before you touch the length. If your 60-second Reels hold people for 40 seconds and your 2-minute ones for 20, cut the longer ones harder. Tempted to move a weak Reel's posting time instead? Read why three posting-time studies disagree first.

Then give your next Reel one job, set its length from the table above, and compare its watch time with those five.

Questions people ask

Can a reel be 20 minutes long?

Yes. Instagram's Help Center says your clips can add up to 20 minutes. To reach people who don't follow you, keep it to 3 minutes or less.

Why can't I post a reel longer than 90 seconds?

Ninety seconds was the limit until January 2025, so your app may be out of date. Update Instagram first. Instagram also says Reels are not available to every account yet.

Are 5 second reels too short?

For a coach, usually. Five seconds fits one line of text, not a point and its proof. In Socialinsider's 2026 study, Reels under 30 seconds had the lowest median views of any length under 3 minutes.

How do I share longer videos on Instagram?

Anything up to 20 minutes can go up as a Reel. Trim anything longer in the reel editor, split it into parts, or post it on YouTube and link it in your bio.
