Descript review (2026): worth it, if you watch the credits

Descript is worth it for talking-head video if you drive the edit. Plans from $16 a month, where the AI credits go, and why its ratings split 2.6 to 4.6.

Ben Moore

The short answer (updated October 2026):

  • Descript is worth it for talking-head video if you drive the edit yourself. You cut by deleting words from the transcript. Studio Sound, filler-word removal and Eye Contact do most of the cleanup.
  • There is a Free plan. Paid plans cost $16, $24 or $50 a month billed yearly, or $24, $35 or $65 billed monthly. Each plan meters media hours and AI credits, and neither rolls over.
  • Users praise the editor. They complain about credits, Descript's Underlord agent, bugs and canceling. Trustpilot rates Descript 2.6 out of 5. Software Advice rates it 4.6.
  • Pick it if you already know what to say and how you will post it, and the edit is your slow step. If the slow steps come before and after the edit, a better editor will not fix your week.

You record yourself talking to camera, and the edit eats your evening. Descript is the tool everyone names. Our verdict: it is worth the money if you do the editing and check whatever its built-in agent does. You get the real plan limits, paying users in their own words and a yes-or-no list at the end.

A disclosure first: CreateSocial makes a competing tool. Everything here comes from Descript's own pages and public reviews, linked as we go.

Descript edits your video by editing the transcript

Descript turns your recording into text, and you edit the text. Delete a sentence and that stretch of video goes with it. You read faster than you scrub a timeline, so this suits talking-head work.

Picture a four-minute answer to a client question. You restarted your second point twice. In Descript both false starts sit on the page as words. You select them and press delete. No hunting through a waveform for the frame where a word ends.

Descript was founded in 2017 by Andrew Mason, the former Groupon CEO. Its pricing page says more than 6 million creators and teams use it. It runs as a desktop app on Mac and Windows, and as a web app that works best in Chrome, Edge or Opera. It is not built for phones or tablets. The help center lists 26 transcription languages.

Text editing is the best reason to buy Descript, but it is no longer Descript's alone. CreateSocial edits the same way. Delete words from the transcript and they are cut from the video. Everything else on this page is either a helper around that one idea or a cost attached to it.

The cleanup tools do most of a talking-head edit

After the rough cut, four tools do the tidying. Each one spends credits.

Studio Sound strips background noise and echo from your voice. It works on the whole file, with an intensity slider. Remove filler words finds the ums and uhs and lets you keep or delete each one. It reads English transcripts only. Shorten word gaps trims long pauses down to a length you choose, such as 200 milliseconds.

Eye Contact moves your gaze to the lens when you read off screen. Descript is blunt about the limits. It wants one clear face, soft light and a script close to the camera, and "large offsets won't apply." So it can fix a glance at notes beside the webcam. A script on a second monitor across the desk is probably too far. Our guide to eye contact correction explains why distance decides it.

That rule holds in every tool. CreateSocial's editor corrects eye contact too, and our teleprompter sits near the camera so there is less to correct in the first place.

Overdub is now AI Speech, and Regenerate can fix a word on camera

The old Overdub lives on as AI Speech. You clone your voice by recording a short consent statement inside Descript, in English. Then Regenerate lets you type a corrected word and hear it in your voice. Each fix covers up to 250 characters, in English only.

This is where Descript wins. Say "17 percent" when you meant "70 percent" in an otherwise perfect take, and you type the fix instead of filming again.

Video is the harder part. A talking-head creator on Reddit wrote in November 2023 that Overdub "works well for voiceovers but not for talking head videos, as it can't synchronize lip movements." Descript has worked on that since. Its Regenerate overview says video projects now regenerate audio and video together by default. A Smooth jump cuts tool patches the cuts your edits leave behind.

The same help center still says on-camera timing "results may vary." Try it on a throwaway clip before you trust it with a video your clients will see.

It records your screen and has a simple teleprompter

Descript can record you as well as edit you. The desktop screen recorder captures your screen, camera and mic at once, which suits a slide walkthrough or a software demo. Rooms records up to 10 people, for interviews and podcasts.

The built-in teleprompter takes a pasted or typed script and scrolls it at a set speed. It does not listen to you. Descript says the scrolling "is time-based and does not respond to your voice." It stays out of the recording in the desktop app. On the web version it shows up in a screen share.

That is enough for a one-minute clip. On a long take, the old problem returns: you fluff line nine and go back to the top. Descript's fix comes after the fact. Remove Retakes keeps your best take, and it spends credits. CreateSocial's recording studio handles it during the recording instead. You record in sections, so a fluffed line means redoing one section. Our teleprompter explainer covers reading one without sounding like you are reading.

Create clips turns a long recording into shorts

Descript can cut a long video into short clips for you. Its Create clips tool reads your script for the strong moments. You choose how many clips you want and how long they run, and they land in a new composition to edit. It spends credits.

For a coach, this is the webinar move. One hour on Zoom becomes a week of short posts.

Watch every clip before it goes out, though. A clip that needs the minute before it to make sense will lose a stranger in the feed. CreateSocial's Find Clips is built around that test. On a video of eight minutes or more, recorded or uploaded, it suggests zero to five standalone clips of about 15 to 90 seconds, each with a strength score. It never pads the list with weak moments. Each clip you take becomes its own video with subtitles.

Descript pricing in October 2026: four plans and two meters

Descript has a Free plan and three paid plans, at $16, $24 and $50 a month billed yearly. Every plan meters two things: media hours and AI credits. The pricing page lists no free trial of the paid plans. The Free plan is how you try Descript, and it needs no credit card.

Prices are per person. Checked against Descript's pricing page and help center on October 12, 2026.

Media hours count everything you upload or record in Descript, transcribed or not, so a take you throw away still counts. AI credits pay for the cleanup and generation tools, and for Underlord, Descript's editing agent. Neither carries over. Unused minutes and credits reset when your plan renews.

Hobbyist has a hard ceiling. Top-ups are sold on Creator and Business only. Run dry on Hobbyist in week three and you wait for renewal or upgrade. On the bigger plans a top-up costs $35 for 350 credits, $80 for 1,000 or $200 for 4,000. It lasts 12 months and cannot be refunded.

Hand-run tools have a price cap, and the agent does not

If you run the tools yourself, the credit cost is predictable. Descript's help center caps Studio Sound and Remove filler words at 30 credits per file. Underlord has no fixed price. It charges for its own reasoning and for every tool it runs, and "each message still uses a few AI credits," even when you only chat with it.

Media hours 10 on Hobbyist, 30 on Creator Uploading a file Recording in the editor Screen recordings Rooms sessions Takes you throw away AI credits 400 on Hobbyist, 800 on Creator Studio Sound: up to 30 a file Filler words: up to 30 a file Eye Contact, word gaps: priced by the job Underlord: no fixed price, charges for its thinking too Not metered on any plan Cutting words in the transcript Dynamic captions Projects
Where a Descript allowance goes, from Descript's pricing page and its help article on media minutes and AI credits.

Here is what that means in a month. Take a hypothetical career coach who posts eight short videos and runs Studio Sound and filler removal on each. At the cap, that is 60 credits a video and 480 a month. Hobbyist's 400 could run out before the month does. Creator's 800 covers it, with room left for Eye Contact, whose cost Descript does not publish. Short clips will often cost less than the cap, because cost grows with length. The Usage tab shows the real figure after each run.

The uncapped agent is where people get burned.

What users praise: the transcript edit and the cleanup

People who like Descript like the same things. On Software Advice it scores 4.6 out of 5 from 183 reviews, 135 of them five stars.

A five-star Trustpilot review from April 2026 lists the talking-head toolkit almost exactly: "I LOVE the editing via text feature, eye contact feature, removing filler, editing pauses (via the script) and copy and paste features for editing."

A long-time user on r/podcasting wrote in January 2025 that "the 'gap removal' feature, and the 'remove filler words' are key features I just can't live without." Another, who has edited more than 100 podcasts in it, said "Studio Sound is great and so is remove filler words."

The closest match to a coach is a team refilming an online course in 2025, a "10-week, 22-ish hour lecture series" that is mostly face to camera. Their verdict on the core idea was short: "Editing from the transcript is great." They also found "Animating with Descript is a breeze."

Look at what is missing from that list. Every quote praises the editor or the cleanup tools. Nobody quoted here praises the agent.

What users complain about: credits, the agent, bugs and canceling

On Trustpilot, Descript scores 2.6 out of 5 from 290 reviews. The complaints fall into four groups.

The first is credits spent on edits nobody asked for. "The AI bot wastes the credits on edits that aren't what I asked for," one reviewer wrote in September 2026. Another, in October, "burned through 800 credits just trying to clean up filler pauses on a short reel, and it kept deleting actual words out of the hook."

Next comes cleanup that cuts real words. A buyer who uploaded a 30-minute lecture found that "many of the words important to the understanding of the lecture were removed." On Reddit, a podcaster noted that filler removal "falsely detects regular words as filler words," such as "like" in "dragon fruit tastes a bit like kiwi." The course team rated the automatic edits "pretty good" but said they clip "things a little too short." They called Eye Contact "Uncanny Valley city."

Then price. One long-standing customer wrote in December 2025: "my monthly bill has soared from $30 to $195. I haven't changed my workflow at all."

And canceling. "Impossible to find where to cancel!" one July 2026 review says.

Descript itself is frank about the agent. Its Underlord help page says it "might overpromise, make incorrect assumptions, or follow you into workflows it's not equipped to complete."

The bad reviews arrived with the credits

The two ratings look like reviews of different products. Mostly they describe different years. Of the 25 reviews Software Advice shows first, 17 date from 2021, and 22 carry its "Incentivized" label. Credits came later. Descript moved free users onto media minutes and AI credits in September 2025. It began moving paid plans from November 17, 2025, and warned that some prices "could increase."

Our read: the editor is as good as its fans say, and the agent is where the money leaks. Use Descript as an editor you drive, not an assistant you hand the job to. Five habits make that easy.

  1. Start on the Free plan with one real video. You get 60 media minutes a month and 100 credits, once.
  2. Pay monthly for the first month. The refund window is short, so a yearly plan you regret is a yearly plan you keep.
  3. Cut by hand in the transcript. Then run Studio Sound and filler removal yourself, with "Avoid harsh cuts" turned on, and check each filler word before it goes.
  4. Give Underlord small, specific jobs. Look at the Usage tab after each one.
  5. Put your renewal date in your calendar, and decide a week before it whether the month paid off.

Is it easy to cancel a Descript subscription?

Yes, once you know that canceling is a downgrade. Descript's cancel page says canceling "is the same as downgrading to the Free plan." Open App Settings with Command or Control and the comma key, pick the right drive if you own more than one, and switch the plan to Free. Do it before your renewal date.

Your paid plan runs to the end of the billing cycle. Then the drive drops to Free, and your projects stay. A top-up balance survives too, but you cannot spend it until you pay again.

Getting money back is harder. The refund policy covers a plan only within 48 hours of the invoice date. Cancel partway through a month or a year and the unused time is not refunded. Top-ups are never refunded.

Who should pick Descript, and who should not

Descript suits a creator whose edit is the slow step. Pick it if most of these sound like you:

  • You already know what you will say, and you already have a way to post. Editing is what eats your time.
  • You record on a Mac or PC, not on your phone.
  • Long videos, courses and webinars are your main format, and you like cutting from text.
  • A cloned voice that fixes a wrong number without a reshoot would save you real time.
  • You need caption files. Descript exports .srt and .vtt, which you can upload to YouTube (our open vs closed captions guide explains when that helps).
  • You interview guests or run a podcast. Our Descript vs Riverside comparison covers that case.

Look elsewhere if these sound more like you:

  • You film on your phone and want to finish there. Descript's system requirements rule out phones and tablets for editing.
  • You want to hand the whole edit to an agent and walk away. Descript's own help page tells you to check its work.
  • You want short videos scheduled from the same tool. Descript exports straight to YouTube, Google Drive and podcast hosts, but not to Instagram, TikTok or LinkedIn.
  • You only edit audio. Audacity is free and open source.
  • The hard part is deciding what to say and getting it out every week. Underlord will brainstorm and draft a script if you ask, but an editor treats ideas as a side job.

CreateSocial edits from the transcript too, and runs the rest of your week

CreateSocial helps coaches, consultants and founders build a personal brand that brings in clients, speaking gigs and customers, without video taking over the week. It learns what you know and runs the whole content week with you, video and written: the ideas, the scripts, the recording, the edit, the thumbnails, the posts and the schedule. Here is one talking-head video going through it.

  • Know what to say before you hit record. Add your website, past videos and posts, and client stories to your knowledge base. CreateSocial turns them into 80 personalized ideas a month, each with a hook and talking points or a full script. Trending Now adds what your niche is talking about every Monday. "Ask me first" asks you a few questions before it writes, so the script tells your real story.
  • Record it clean the first time. The teleprompter sits near the camera, in desktop Chrome or Edge or on the iPhone app, with a full script or talking points and the current bullet highlighted. You record in sections with one-tap retakes, so a stumble costs one section, not the take. Dual mode frames 16:9 and 9:16 at once. Our guide to editing talking-head videos faster shows how much edit that saves.
  • Edit by editing the transcript. Delete words and they are cut, just as in Descript. Remove Silences clears the pauses in one click. Eye contact correction fixes your gaze, Visuals adds B-roll from free stock video, and subtitles come in 11 styles drawn into the video. Filmed it somewhere else, or recorded remote guests in another tool? Upload the MP4, WebM or MOV file, up to 2GB.
  • Get the thumbnail without a design app. CreateSocial makes YouTube thumbnails from your video and photos of you, three at a time, in your brand style. Change one by describing it.
  • Turn one video into a week of posts. The same video becomes a LinkedIn post, an X thread, a blog post, a newsletter or a LinkedIn carousel you export as a PDF. On a video of eight minutes or more, like a course module or a webinar, Find Clips picks out the moments that stand alone. On weeks you don't film, it writes the posts with no video at all.
  • Put it all on one calendar. Schedule to TikTok, Instagram, YouTube, LinkedIn, Facebook and X, each with a caption written for that platform. Batch a month in one sitting.

Also in the one plan: competitor tracking, screen recording with your camera as a bubble, reaction videos in Layout or Stitch mode, virtual backgrounds with or without a real green screen and platform safe-zone guides.

The other difference is who you deal with. Descript is venture-backed. TechCrunch reported its $50 million Series C, led by the OpenAI Startup Fund, in November 2022. CreateSocial is bootstrapped by a solo founder, Ben Moore, in Cincinnati, Ohio, so you talk to him directly. Feature requests go to him, and a lot of what customers ask for gets built. His agency generated millions of followers and millions of dollars in revenue for clients, and he has generated hundreds of millions of views.

It is $129 a month, or $99 a month billed annually, with no add-ons and no per-feature charges. Start your free trial and take last week's video from transcript to scheduled post today. Want a content plan built around your own offer first? Book a free strategy call with Ben.

Questions people ask
